The Oklahoma Challenge Joins Forces with Cambridge Mobile Telematics for Teen Safe Driving Contest

Road safety organization and telematics leader team up for shared mission of making the world’s roads and drivers safer
October 23, 2023

NORMAN, Okla. & CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Oklahoma Challenge, a traffic safety program focused on increasing teen traffic safety in Oklahoma, and Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics service provider, have partnered for another Oklahoma Challenge Safe Driving Contest, a safe driving competition for teen drivers in Oklahoma. The competition offers young drivers a competitive platform to win prizes for safe driving, including cash, and resources for their schools and clubs. The GHSA and the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office are key partners in the challenge.

“At Oklahoma Challenge, we’re committed to building healthy and safe communities by providing teen drivers with incentives to develop safe habits on the road,” said Nele Rogers, Associate Director at the OK Challenge. “Teaming up with CMT for this competition offers a unique opportunity to highlight the dangers of distracted driving among teens and work towards safer roads. We can’t wait to see how this year’s contest reduces risky driving behaviors among teens in Oklahoma.”

The competition kicks off on October 23, 2023, and concludes on January 8, 2024, offering over $5,000 in prize money. The safest drivers will be awarded $500, and funds for their respective schools. The top 25 winners will each earn $100. Additionally, there’s a weekly chance to win $25 through a random drawing. This contest is open exclusively to Oklahoma’s licensed drivers aged 16 to 22.

Teen drivers from Oklahoma can register by downloading the CMT’s DriveWell Go app from the App Store or Google Play Store and inputting their school token. The app automatically analyzes driving behaviors like distraction and speeding and provides insights and feedback. Using feedback from the app, contest participants can gain valuable insights, empowering them to develop safer driving habits.

During the 2020 Oklahoma Challenge Contest, risky driving behaviors, including speeding and distracted driving, dropped significantly. Teens reduced speeding by over 21% and distracted driving by over 17%, leading to an overall 18% reduction in risky driving behaviors.

CMT is proud to continue to support the important work of the Oklahoma challenge,” said Ryan McMahon, CMT’s SVP of Strategy and Corporate Development. “This is the only teen safe driving contest of its kind and it has a proven record of reducing risky behaviors, such as distracted driving and speeding. With Oklahoma’s 8% increase in distraction rates since 2021, raising awareness to help eradicate road risks throughout the state is crucial. We’re excited to see teen drivers in Oklahoma get excited about road safety and work with Oklahoma Challenge to make safer roads and drivers in their state.”

About The Oklahoma Challenge
The Oklahoma Challenge project began in 1984 to address the dangers of teen drunk driving and encourage young drivers to wear seat belts. Following great success in these areas, Oklahoma Challenge turned its attention to a rising concern – the dire problem of distracted driving, especially among people 15-24 years old. Working in partnership with Oklahoma student groups, Oklahoma Challenge now educates novice drivers about the dangers of engaging in distracting activities – such as texting, talking on the phone, and interacting with passengers – while driving.

Oklahoma Challenge is unique from other initiatives. Not only do we successfully train thousands of Oklahoma middle, high, technical school, and university/college students on traffic safety and gain their personal commitment to driving safely; we also provide support, motivation, and incentives to empower the students to share this message with their peers, their families, their schools, and their entire community. The outcome of this personal commitment and then expanded sharing of this message is that thousands of additional Oklahomans hear this message in a personal, meaningful way, from people they know and care about, leading not only to newly acquired traffic-safety information but to true safe driving behavior change. The Oklahoma Challenge’s mailing address is PO Box 6362, Norman, OK, 73070.
