Cambridge Mobile Telematics Expands into Latin America with New Leadership
CMT to improve road safety across the region with new telematics-based mobility solutions
November 12, 2024, Cambridge, MA— Cambridge Mobile Telematics (CMT), the world’s largest telematics service provider, today announced its expansion into Latin America with the appointment of Christian Terfi as Senior Director for the region. Based in Argentina, Christian brings over 16 years of expertise in connected insurance and telematics, most recently with Scope Technology. He has a proven track record of driving innovation and establishing strategic partnerships across Latin America and beyond.
Christian’s extensive expertise includes spearheading successful usage-based insurance programs and leading numerous telematics initiatives across Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, the Andean Region, and Central America. His leadership has helped insurers and mobility providers unlock new revenue streams and embrace digital transformation through connected mobility solutions.
“CMT is rapidly expanding worldwide, partnering with insurers to tackle the unique challenges in each market and make roads safer for drivers everywhere. Our growth in Latin America is a key step in CMT’s mission to improve road safety on a global scale,” said William V. Powers, CMT’s co-founder and CEO. “Latin America faces distinct challenges — low insurance penetration, high vehicle ownership costs, and critical road safety issues. With our new leadership in the region, we’re excited to help insurers reduce claims, enhance customer engagement, and lead the digital transformation across the world of mobility.”
Making Latin America’s Roads Safer with Telematics
Latin America has over 100 million vehicles on the road. However, the region faces a high number of traffic fatalities, with more than 100,000 deaths per year, driven by factors such as distracted driving, impaired driving, and speeding. In Brazil alone, vehicle fatalities have increased by 11% over the past decade.
In addition, low insurance penetration rates — just 35% in Brazil and Mexico — pose a significant challenge. Many drivers remain uninsured due to the high cost of ownership and limited enforcement by authorities.
Insurers in the region are ready for transformational change to address rising costs, improve customer engagement, and reduce road risk. Since 2017, usage-based insurance and pay-as-you-drive business models have captured the attention of Latin American insurers.
CMT has helped insurers introduce connected insurance programs worldwide, improving road safety and lowering crash risks. In South Africa, CMT powers Discovery Insure’s Vitality Drive program, which has cut crash frequency by 24%. In Japan, Aioi’s Tough Mimamoru Car Insurance Plus S program saw an 18% drop in crash risk among participating drivers. In the U.S., engaged drivers in connected insurance programs see a 5.5% decrease in the likelihood of a crash with an injury.
In addition to reducing crash risk in Latin America, CMT’s technology provides critical support for drivers after a crash and makes the claims process more efficient for both drivers and insurers. Tens of millions of drivers worldwide already rely on CMT’s crash detection technology, which boosts digital First Notice of Loss (FNOL) completion rates and streamlines claims management. This efficiency helps lower costs and allows drivers to get back on the road faster.
Now, CMT is bringing this transformative technology to Latin America. By digitizing FNOL and optimizing claims processes, CMT’s platform enhances customer experience and operational efficiency for insurers, while reducing emergency response times and simplifying digital claims. This expansion enables Latin American insurers to engage drivers with new services, improve road safety, and reduce claims costs — marking a major leap toward a digitally connected and safer mobility ecosystem across Latin America.
