Cambridge Mobile Telematics Expands in Italy, Announces New Leadership
With driving insights from over 12 million monthly active users, CMT to increase digital adoption and retention while reducing risk for Italian insurers and mobility providers

With more than 15 years of international experience, Marco Amendolagine is an IoT and insurtech product expert with extensive experience in product development, project management, and service delivery. Marco previously held leadership positions at Octo Telematics and IMS, where he led product development and strategic projects.
Valerio Castellana has over 15 years of experience in managing data-driven projects and IoT solutions within the insurance and automotive industries. Prior to joining CMT, Valerio held leadership roles at Swiss Re in Automotive & Mobility Solutions, where he led the Commercial Auto business unit, and at Vodafone Automotive, where he spearheaded sales strategy and product development for IoT solutions in the insurance industry.

The rising importance of digital telematics in Italy
Digital telematics is more important than ever in Italy today. Average insurance premiums have dropped 40% since 2012, falling from €558 in 2012 to €333 in 2024. Frequency and severity have increased since the pandemic. Distracted driving is core to this problem — over 15% of crashes were caused by distraction in 2020, 54% of Italians admit to using their phones while driving daily, and distracted driving is one of the leading causes of car crashes in Italy. These trends have pushed combined ratios well over 100, making claims cost reductions and customer retention more important than ever for Italian auto insurers.
Italian insurers have long relied on black box technologies to combat negative trends such as claims mismanagement and systemic fraud. While successful with specific customer segments, black boxes aren’t designed to grow digital adoption and improve customer engagement. Digital telematics has been proven to mitigate road risk. In a study of over 100,000 usage-based insurance (UBI) drivers in the US, CMT found that engaged drivers improve over time. The riskiest drivers engaged with UBI programs reduce their distracted driving by 20%, speeding by 27%, and hard braking by 9%, lowering their chance of a crash with a bodily injury by 5.5%. Additional studies by CMT show that engaged drivers are 65% safer, 57% less distracted, and have 76% higher retention rates. When CMT detects a crash and sends emergency services, drivers give their insurer a Net Promoter Score 95% higher than average.
